Hola! I’m Matias (Muh-tee-us)

Born and raised in between Mexico and New Zealand, i’m a cultural melting pot working as a creative art director in Australia.

For the last 6 years, my experience has mainly been in advertising and design, with stints in tech and the arts. This lets me bring a more unusual approach to the work, whether its a behaviour change project, a brand book, creative PR, or retail PoS.

Warm, curious, playful and eclectic, i’m comfortable with complexity and tend to push for left-of-field ideas that bring people together.

Most recently I spent 3.5 years at one of Australia’s top independent agencies, Thinkerbell.

My career as a creative ‘Tinker’ began over three years ago. Since then I have been making Measured Magic on briefs involving advertising, behavioural sciences, PR, and media for a variety of brands such as these:

At LIFX (LIFX= ‘Light Effects’) I was part of a small team of creative designers building the boldest brand in smart home tech. At this startup, everything was about exploring the potential of smart light.

From how it could make you feel, such as relaxing your mind or starting a party, to how it could solve problems, like replacing your annoying alarm clock, and even disinfecting surfaces with HEV wavelengths.

In 2023 my sister, mother, and I began a project with the organisation Kumva & Kwibuka to celebrate the stories of their speakers who survived the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. With 2024 being the 30 year commemoration of the tragedy, we set out to create a multimedia exhibition that showcased these stories of resilience.

Thanks to financial support from Thinkerbell and STARTTS, as well as dozens of generous donors through our crowdfunding, we were able to ex the project at 107 Redfern for two weeks in August.

Not only was attendance beyond what we expected, but the story got picked up by all trade media outlets, and we had attendance from MP Councillor Emelda Davis as well as members of GLAPD (who later invited me to become a board member and the chair of the Advocacy, Media and Comms subcommittee). Finally, we were invited to showcase the work at the upcoming Sydney Head On Festival at the end of the year.

  • +6000 people reached on social media, plus many others through trade media

+280 attended the exhibition over 8 days

    +37 new donors

+8 survivors who feel empowered to continue telling their story

  • Thank you to the Kumva & Kwibuka team: Chantal, Aggy, Nadine, Vivens, Amedee, Ladis, Olivier, Pacifique & Dr. Ari Lander.

Big thanks to STARTTS, 107, and Thinkerbell, especially to Adam, Margie, Jim, Chas and Ally.

Huge thanks to everyone who donated. This wouldn't have been possible without them, including our suppliers BrewDog, Breheny Bros, and McWilliams Wines.

Finally, thanks to my sister Martina (photographer and artist) and our mother Marina (project manager, educator).
